Moisture Retention
Learn the science and art of keeping your 4C hair perfectly hydrated for optimal health, growth, and manageability.
Deep Conditioning
Deep conditioning is important to moisturizing your hair. Start with a sulfate-free and clarifying shampoo, this helps to remove dirt and product buildup. Rinse that out then apply a deep conditioning treatment. If you don't have a hooded dryer or steamer, here is the DIY way: cover your hair with a plastic shower cap, then place a hot, damp towel over the cap (after ringing out excess water), then cover the towel with another plastic shower cap or plastic bag to trap the heat and moisture. Let it sit for 20-30 minutes, then rinse it out with cool water to close the cuticles. Follow-up with the LOC method to seal in moisture. Repeat once a week!
Co-washing
Co-washing refers to just using conditioner to wash your hair. Shampoo is effective in removing dirt and buildup, but it's also removing natural oils from your hair. By just co-washing, you can prevent hair breakage and is mainly recommended for dehydrated hair and building moisture back up in your strands. It is still beneficial to use shampoo periodically, even if it's once a month alongside co-washing. If you do, make sure it's sulfate-free!
Sealing Methods
Sealing moisture is the final step in maintaining hydrated 4C hair. The LOC (Liquid, Oil, Cream) or LCO method starts with water or a water-based leave-in, follow with a light oil like jojoba, grapeseed, or argan then finish with a cream moisturizer. Remember: a little goes a long way and follow the instructions on the packaging of your products for the best results. This method can help retain moisture in your hair for days.
